Australian Student Visa Holders Allowed To Work In Australia For Four Years

Australian Student Visa 4 year VisaHi guys, you may have noticed due to the lack of updates that everything’s quite quiet on the Australian Immigration front at the moment.

Unless anyone is interested in the hundreds of illegal immigrants arriving by boat then there’s really not been that much to write about!

One snippet of quite important news that we’ve not covered is the news that The Gillard government has announced plans to grant all overseas students, graduating from the country’s universities, an Australia visa which will allow them to work in any occupation for up to four years.

To qualify for an Australia visa, overseas students will be required to have competent English skills, health insurance and meet any health or security requirements. The scheme will potentially allow every foreign student in Australia, currently 220,000, to remain in the country.

Australian Student Visa Holders Now Allowed To Work In Australia For Four Years

Mr Bowen said it would help the country’s international education industry, which is currently worth AU$18 billion (£11.6 billion) to expand.

The scheme has faced staunch opposition from workers’ unions and trade organisations who have protested the use of foreign labour in the country’s ongoing resources boom and claim Australian immigration is limiting opportunities for Australian citizens.

Mr Bowen argues that the scheme will not affect skilled occupations.

“These arrangements are not linked to skilled migration so applicants for this visa would not be required to nominate an occupation on the skilled occupation list or undertake a skills assessment,” said a spokesperson for the minister.

“The government will reserve the capacity to modify arrangements in future according to economic and employment circumstances.”

The system already in place allows foreign students to remain in the country and work for up to 18 months after graduation but is currently limited to those students graduating in medicine, engineering, architecture, accounting, teaching and trades based courses; all other graduates must leave the country within a month of graduating.

This change will likely help increase the attractiveness of the Student visa for wannabe migrants which has seen numbers dwindle in recent times

  1. This is great news for Students. However, I think this is bad for Australians, in particular those that are unemployed, simply because these students, most of which are foreigners, will provide cheap labour resulting in regular aussies getting passed over.

    • We are not necessarily cheap labour, for instance plenty of primary teachers trained in Australia can’t get work regardless of our talent/grades/dedication simply for visa purposes. It’s unfair to train us to Australian curriculum and then making it impossible to work here.

    • It all depends on the situation, if a foreign student makes the effort to gain a qualification in which Australia needs but the Aussie don’t then he can’t complain if he can’t get a job, Too many kids complain there are no jobs but they spend most of there day down the beach, You have 1 life so study hard in a subject that will pay out and enjoy the life you deserve, you only get out of life what you put in.

  2. As a current student in Australia I’m very interested! What is the process for getting this work allowance visa? What’s the code for this visa?
