These particular visa classes are often of the most interest to migrants looking to immigrate to Australia as attaining such a visa brings with it the excellent side benefit of Australian Permanent Residency (PR).

As mentioned above you can prove that you have competent English if you can demonstrate an IELTS score of 6 for each of the core components.
However, if you are a citizen of and hold a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland, with your application this is currently considered as being sufficient evidence to prove that you have competent English.
Therefore, unless you are looking for additional points by acquiring Proficient or Superior English you do not need to take an IELTS exam if you are from these countries.
What IELTS Score Will Give Me Extra Points?
Competent English is not the highest level of English recognised by the Australian Government.
From an IELTS perspective, if you score highly enough and achieve an IELTS Score higher than 6, you may qualify to be recognised as having what is classified as either Proficient or Superior English.
If you start hitting these high thresholds, you will be rewarded with extra points which you can then contribute towards your total points score.
If you have used an Australian points calculator and have identified that you may need some additional points to qualify for an Australian Visa, performing particularly strongly in your IELTS test may well give you the points you need to make a big difference in increasing your chances of obtaining an Australian Visa.
Let’s take a look at the IELTS requirements for Australia that will see you recognised as having either Proficient or Superior English.
